Alleged murder of ANC Councillor spark unrest in Mabopane

Protestors seeking justice for Mr Tshepo Motaung

The community of Mabopane vows not to rest until the killers of Ward 22 councillor are put behind bars.

Tsepo Motaung was allegedly shot at least 20 times last week Friday on his way from work by unknown hitmen.

He was driving home from a meeting in the company of his uncle and nephew when they were ambushed at a cul-de-sac at Mabopane Block UX. His nephew escaped unharmed while his uncle sustained gun wounds.

It is alleged that his death is politically motivated and linked to the party’s recent candidate selection process.

Mr Tshepo Motaung is said to have been a generous person who served his community with dedication

The community together with SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) and some ANC members, barricaded Molefe Makinta road with rocks and burning tyres vowing to protest until justice is served for their councillor.

Addressing the aggrieved protestors in Mabopane, the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) leader in the township, Mr David Tshesedi, said Mr Motaung was not a greedy person who faithfully served the community and described Mr Motaung as a pacemaker in ward 22.

“We are protesting because we want justice for Tshepo. Many councillors have been killed and justice has not been served on their behalf. Tshepo’s death was politically motivated and we seek justice.

He said Mr Motaung was in the running for the position of councillor and some people were not in favour of Motaung’s re-election as a councillor.

City of Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams called on all parties and candidates and activists to engage peacefully before the local government elections taking place on 1 November 2021.

“I want to offer my deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Mr Tshepo Motaung. May his soul rest in peace” says Mayor Williams.

Captain Mavela Masondo, the police spokesperson, could not respond to the attack.
