Shoprite Mabopane Market Day provides opportunities for community

The NOSA Early Learning Orphans and Vulnarable Children’s Center from Winterveldt Participated in the market day hosted at Shoprite Mabopane last week.

The market day concept was first introduced in 2017. It gives community food gardens the opportunity to sell their excess crops directly to customers at selected Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets.

This not only enables the small-scale farmers to generate additional income but also equips them with the skills necessary to operate in the retail environment.

Shoprite Group’s Sustainability Manager, Mr Sanjeev Raghubir said the Market Day enables community gardens to promote themselves to a wider customer base that they can sell their excess crops to.

“It provides a much-needed additional income which helps to boost the independence of these small-scale farmers which in turn leads to greater sustainability,” said Mr Raghubir.

Ms Joyce Morudi from NOSA Early Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Centre said it was a great opportunity to be able to sell to more customers.

“Participating in Market Day this year was exciting because we usually only sell to people in our community and now, we were able to sell our harvest to more customers than before,” she said.
