Alderman Randall Williams and various members of the Mayoral Committee, visited Ya Bana Village for Children in Winterveld, Mabopane to commemorate Mandela Day, on 18 July 2022.
Ya Bana Village offers shelter and support to orphaned children currently accommodating 58 children and over the years, 12 children have been unified with their families. The shelter serves more than 600 meals per day.
Mayor Williams said the shelter is doing valuable and critical work in their local community, and he would encourage residents to support this institution. The City will also be making a donation to the facility in order to support their ongoing work.
“Another aspect of our Mandela Day activities at the shelter was the launch of the recycling center within the home. It is important that we teach our children to be environmentally conscious,” he said.
He said the City also supported Mandela Day activities at the Good Hope Community Organization, which also takes care of orphaned and vulnerable children.
